This past weekend I attended the Norrköping Twestival which was a very interesting Twestival as it had the form of an Open Coffee. We wasn’t that many there but the quality of the discussions was extremely high. I love those meetings when anything can happen and when you in the convo gets a multitude of interesting thoughts popping up in your mind. For me it gave me in the end one important question I’m taking with me, as a ‘fridge question’ to put up on your fridge and think about every time you go there to get food. You can do the same thing and if you’re on Twitter post it there and tag it with #fridgeQ
My question is: How can I understand how to use social web the best way to support charity organizations?
For me this is one of the essential questions right now, doing some charity work myself in Concerts for change. Of course we used the powers of social networking advertising our event, but what I’m thinking is also how can organizations like MSF, Red Cross and other equally established organizations. My guess is that the older organization the harder to adopt the new ways of conversation, as its rigid way of organizing and doing business will put so much obstacles in the way for this new way of communicating and conversing that it might be even hard to even give it a try. But Lets not paint the situation all black, there are ways to get into it but it might not be the easy way. Just out of curiosity I did a checkup of some charity organizations on Twitter and this is what I found out:
Medecins sans Frontieres/Doctors without Borders has got a strong presence at Twitter, there’s a lot of national organizations online there.
Red Cross Has got an even stronger presence at Twitter with both national and local groups.
The Hunger Project Has not yet got a very strong presence on Twitter, in fact their head office only done three tweets since April this year.
This last part is not in any way a deep analysis, just an observation.
The other part that charity organizations have to look into is the ease on how to give money to their organizations. Not all want to use their credit cards or for that matter their mobile phone to give money. I would suggest a PayPal or an equal service possibility and maybe even a way to tweet money.
I will probably return to my question many times and this is only a start, so let me know what your thoughts are!
